At MSCL House we recognize the importance of proper nutrition to help both the brain and the body heal from the damage caused by long-term substance abuse. We stress to our residents that having proper nutrition can help repair damage to organs and tissues, improve immune defenses, increase their energy and mood which in turn helps them maintain sobriety for longer and recover more quickly. So, we were thrilled when the Hunger Coalition offered our residents the opportunity to participate in their Veggie Prescription Program. This program originally began in partnership with St. Luke’s for patients with diet-related illnesses and food insecurities. Later, the Hunger Coalition expanded the program to include food pantry participants experiencing mental health challenges. Aside from access to healthy food, participants in the program develop a sense of community when gathering at the farm and garden. MSCL House residents commit to attending at least 6 of the 12 weeks of veggie pick-ups at the farm, join activities and prepare meals in the outdoor kitchen with St. Luke’s nutritionists.
