Dear Friends of MSCL House,
Although it seems as if spring may never arrive in the Wood River Valley this year, opportunities and new beginnings continue to take root and blossom at MSCL.
The new sober house in Hailey is up and running with a full complement of seven men working on their sobriety, bringing our current resident count to 15. As we observe all the positive energy and activity in our two houses, we remain ever grateful to Jeanne Herberger – a new donor referred to us by Michelle Griffith of ARCH Community Housing Trust – whose significant contribution to our capital campaign made it possible to acquire this much-needed second home. This collaboration exemplifies what can be accomplished when partners work together.
Beyond MSCL House’s promise of safe, sober housing, the wraparound services we offer play an important role in our residents’ recovery. Research shows that individuals with substance use disorders often experience other problems that affect their life circumstances, so MSCL House supports residents with a variety of services to give them the best chance to succeed.
For example, MSCL House is helping two residents begin their journey to higher education. The programs they are pursuing will help improve their lives and their future employment prospects. Also, our nutrition program helps residents learn to prepare healthy meals, giving them an important life skill and a great way to socialize and interact. Our new kitchen and the ongoing support of St. Luke’s and other donors help make this program a success. With summer right around the corner, we look forward to prepping our vegetable garden beds for the growing season and incorporating a lot of fresh produce into our recipes!
Finally, a special thank you to the members of 5B Quilt Guild for donating their works of art (in the form of handmade quilts) to our residents. The colorful quilts have helped the men decorate their rooms and give them a warm, cozy feeling. Best wishes, Sonya Wilander Executive Director |

"The 5B quilt guild has about 25 active members. Quilting Goodness is the philanthropic branch of the guild. The 7 or 8 of us meet once a month and sew quilts for The Advocates, Senior Connection, Hospice & Palliative Care of WRV and MSCL. We also sew quilts and other items which we sell at the Trailing of the Sheep. Some of the earned money we donate to local charities, while the rest of the money we use to continue our own quilt sewing." |

"It's heartwarming to me that someone took the time to make this beautiful quilt. It brightens my room and make me feel special. I am very touched." |
On April 22nd, MSCL House is partnering with the Idaho Office of Drug Policy, South Central Public Health District, and Hailey Police to participate in the DEA's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. For details, click here. |

Since 2019, St. Luke’s has been a steadfast supporter of the services we offer to men in the community. They support MSCL House through grant funding and involvement with our Wellness programs, including nutrition classes and assistance with medical and pharmacy needs. St. Luke’s talks about their partnership with MSCL below: "St. Luke’s Health System (SLHS) and St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation (SLWRF) are both proud to invest in the Men’s Second Chance Living. The work of Men’s Second Chance Living addresses several top priority "health needs in our community, including substance abuse treatment, availability of mental health services, and housing stability. St. Luke’s Wood River’s Center for Community Health often refers men here not only for their sober living needs, but for all the wrap around services they provide to help get members of our community back on their feet. The grants from the SLWR Foundation and SLHS’s Community Health Improvement Fund support the expansion of MSCL’s operations that assist the organization in addressing these significant factors that impact overall health and outcomes.
St. Luke’s Wood River also provides funding through its sponsorship program, primarily to support its speaker series, which helps bring valuable awareness and advice to a broader audience in the community.
Together, St. Luke’s Health System, St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation and the St. Luke’s Wood River Center for Community Health provide significant support of MSCL to improve the health of people in our region."
